Introduction: In the context of this story the Pharisees have accused Jesus for his friendship with sinners. In answer to their libel we are given a great example of the heart of the shepherd, the condition of the sheep, the extent of the search and the result of salvation. First we see:
1. The Libel of the Pharisees – Luke 15:2 “This man receiveth sinners”
2. The Love of the Shepherd –
A. Loved enough to leave. (vs 4; Phil 2:7
B. Loved enough to go after. (vs 4; Phil 2:7)
C. Loved enough to continue “until” vs 4; Phil 2:8)
3. The Lostness of the Sheep – “in the wilderness”; “lost” (word means to perish)
A. It was away from help. (Rom 3:23)
B. It could not save itself. (Titus 3:5)
C. Needed Someone to intervene. (Rom 5:8)
4. The Labor of the Shepherd
A. He left the fold to go seeking. (John 1:12)
B. He sought. (Luke 19:10)
C. He saved. (Heb 7:25)
5. The Lodging for those found. (vs 6) “and when he cometh home”
A. He has a place prepared. (John 14:1-3)
B. He will bring the rescued “home” with Him.
C. At home with Him there is “fulness of joy”.
Conclusion: What a blessing to see the goodness of God, the grace to rescue freely given, the price sufficiently paid, the joy of salvation, and at last the culmination of joyful homecoming.
